Coastal Design Co (NZ) Ltd was founded by Jo Eddington (pic below right) on Waiheke Island, New Zealand in 2006. Created out of a desire for beautiful and practical outdoor living, Coastal Design is now recognised as New Zealand's most popular outdoor furniture brand specialising in exclusive New Zealand and European designed furniture. We have created a lifestyle brand that embodies the best of NZ design featuring contemporary, beautiful furniture for indoor and outdoor living, incorporating quality components sourced from industry leaders (Sunbrella®, 316 and 304 stainless steel, Exclusive textilene fabrics , Recycled Teak) this allows us to create world-class furniture designs for use outdoors all year round ....regardless of the weather!

Staying up to date with the latest global design trends sees us clocking up the Air-miles, travelling internationally to the Northern Hemisphere twice per season. We gather inspiration from latest trends from Europe, Japan, Asia and around the world as well as our own beautiful country. In 2011 we will be attending SPOGA international Outdoor & Garden Fair ,Cologne followed by Maison Object in Paris.

Research & Testing:
People often ask about how we test the products we make and sell. Firstly we only use world class materials and components
Then, in addition to the rigorous factory testing and R&D, every piece of Coastal Design is then stringently tested by our "in-house" quality team.
We use real life testers, in real life situations, using real furniture.
Our ''Testing Team" evolves constantly.
At present, the full time team is made up of : two blended families, several teenagers, two school age children under seven,
one adventurous but very cute toddler age three.
We also have four legged friends, being three dogs (golden retriever, weimaraner [RIP] and a rather naughty little schnauzer). And, oh our two neighbours cats!
To compliment the above , our testing team, includes anonymous assortment of good friends who love nothing more than to sit, relax alfresco, curled barefoot up on the sofa , in the garden or out on the deck. Generally this type of testing involves numerous children interrupting, lots of great conversation. Lots of laughter. And usually a few wines.
Unbelievably, from time to time some of this assortment of food, red wine, dirty children's feet, lipstick, chocolate, melted raspberry ice-cream, marmite sammies, sweet chilli sauce etc (you get the picture) ends up on the lovely white sofas. !!! The odd howling Nor-Easter will occasionally see our squabs fly off over the fence into the neighbours pool.
But generally there is no need for concern. Our furniture is pretty much bullet-proof, and we can tell you this because we test it ourselves.
Testing Laboratory Stage 2 is the technical stage. Soiled /dirty white sunbrella cushions are transferred to our in-House Operations team (i.e. the laundry wash room).
Where we remove the zip off covers, wash, or...bleach if necessary (yes Sunbrella® fabrics are bleachable so they wash up like brand new)
We then simply replace covers –and testing resumes. From here the cycle starts again and we continue to live life as normal awaiting the next mega-testing phase (children's birthday parties with pink icing cake, Toddlers with felt tip pens for example or perhaps a football game or a pool party for the teenagers.)
We take durability and practicality very seriously.
In our view, If you can’t live with it, clean it, and keep it looking as-good as new - then we won’t make it or sell it. Coastal Design furniture is extremely hard wearing and durable and offers excellent value for money. Eco–friendly
We aim to be environmentally responsible. Gloster® Teak Outdoor collections are certified as 100% sustainable.Plantation teak is inherently more environmentally friendly than natural forest timber because no teak trees existed until the plantations were established and, due to their careful management, trees are constantly being planted at a rate that exceeds those being felled. Most importantly, the plantations in Indonesia are actively managed to be a sustainable system which not only has low impact on the eco-system, but is fully integrated into the Indonesian social system and maximises local employment. Coastal Design PE Rattan/ Synthetic Wicker ranges are made from recyclable materials. Not only are our hand-woven Outdoor wickers resistant to the elements, they are also designed with respect for the environment in 100% recyclable polystrand with no known toxins.
We use exclusively Sunbrella® in our outdoor and indoor cushions all made to our specifications. Sunbrella® recycles all fibre and fabric remnants for alternative applications. Their unique colouring process avoids harmful liquid wastes associated with conventional dyeing methods.
